Rush fans are the best

As you may have seen from the last post, Kevin and I went to see Rush last night at Deer Creek.  Yes, I do know that it is now called Verizon Wireless Music Center, but to me it will always be known as Deer Creek.

Kevin waited till the last minute to get tickets.  He’s a HUGE die-hard Rush fan and had been watching some tickets on Ebay, but they ended up going for way more than he wanted to pay.  So he decided we would just go to the show and see what kind of deal we could get on some really good seats from a scalper, and as a last resort we would just get lawn seats.  Waiting till the last minute seems to work out really well for Kevin.  I worry and plan and make to-do lists, and plan most things down to every minute detail.  Kevin does everything at the very last minute and things seem to work out just fine for him.

On our way to the show Kevin pulls over to talk to some people selling tickets, and ends up buying 2 tickets in the lower pavilion, about 10 rows from the front, for not a whole lot over face value.  Nice.  That would have never worked for me.  And it was a WAY better deal than anything that was on Ebay.

We get to the show and get in line to get scanned and show our tickets.  Somehow, without me knowing, my billfold manages to fall out of my purse.  I have no idea how this happened.  I have a new purse that Kevin hates, but is the perfect shape for me and my junk.  It is not the type of purse that kind of falls over easily, it’s more long and like a messenger bag which means to dump things out, or for them to fall out, you pretty much would have to hold on to the bottom and flip it upside down.  I love the purse because my last one was long and narrow and everything fell out all the time.  So it literally baffles me how the billfold fell out.

Right before we show our tickets, I hear what sounds like someone shouting my name.  At least the last name sounds right but not sure about the first name.  Hmmm…strange.  Thinking someone we know is yelling to say hi I turn around and think I see who is yelling my name.  If I am looking at the right person I have never seen this guy in my life.  We really want to just get in the gate and get to our great seats so we go on in.  We show our tickets and walk into the gate.  I reach into my purse to put the ticket away, and realize my billfold is missing.  Sheer panic sets in.  To replace all of the stuff in it would be an absolute horror.  Anyone who has ever lost their purse or wallet knows how much time goes into replacing identification cards, debit cards, credit cards, and all of that other stuff we carry around.  About 20 seconds later a woman taps me on the shoulder and says “Are you Emily?”  Yes, I answer, most confused.  She then tells me that she and her husband found my billfold in the line and turned it into the lost and found which is 10 feet from where we are standing.  Unbelievable.  I am baffled at how I even lost it to begin with, and that it was recovered to me so quickly and honestly.  My husband and I are truly amazed at what just happened and have a renewed faith in people.  There really are good people out there.

On to the show.  If you’ve ever been to a Rush concert, the fans are the most loyal, die-hard fans you’ll ever see.  And I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my day.  I would live at Deer Creek if they would let me.  The outdoors, the live music, being with friends, the people watching, nothing is better in my book.

The majority of the fans are male and it seems many, if not most, of them are drummers who are there to drool over Neal Peart’s amazing abilities.  Neal Peart is Rush’s drummer, and his arms and legs seem to flail about independently from his body.  He truly is amazing to watch.

Most people are air drumming throughout the show, and of course singing along with every song.  A really nice guy behind us let Kevin use his binoculars for a LOT of the show.  This was the last concert on the tour so they were passing out $20 tour books for free, which we never noticed, and the nice binocular guy behind us had grabbed a couple and gives Kevin a tour book, too! The show was truly amazing.  Kevin is really turning me into a Rush fan.  And sitting up close is really an entirely different experience than sitting in the lawn where I usually sit.

After the show we go to our car and prepare for what is usually an hour long process of getting out of the parking lot.  Somehow it only takes us about 10 minutes, and then in 10 more minutes we are home.  That’s just how things work out for last minute Kevin.

Steely Dan

Steely Dan Cincinnati 7/13/08

Kevin and I went to Cincinnati Sunday night to see Steely Dan. We arrived at the hotel around 4 - just enough time to go find somewhere to eat, relax for a bit, and be good and ready for our cab to pick us up without having to rush. We went looking for somewhere to eat, and came across a beautiful country road, and then stumbled across what appeared to be a diamond in the rough. Let me back up by saying that Kevin and I have the worst luck when we are randomly looking for something to eat. So we were more than a bit hesitant. We went to this restaurant, Knotty Pine on the Bayou….it was phenomenal. There were framed reviews from local magazines  - a good sign.  They also highly suggested you have a reservation. Well, we didn’t but we got lucky, likely due to it being Sunday. Kevin had frog legs which of course led to Kermit the Frog voices, “ah geesh, don’t eat my friends!” They were absolutely fabulous with a nice warm butter to dip them in. I had blackened grouper with rice and green beans. It was the best grouper I had ever had. It was mild and spicy and buttery and wonderful. (Have you noticed I really enjoy food?) The chef was from Louisiana which you could tell by the great taste of our meal.

So on to the concert. Something interesting to me was that we had 3 different groups of people approach us about our age and how could we possibly be fans or even know who Steely Dan was. I thought that was very interesting. Yes, Kevin and I do look young, but enough already! We definitely were out of our element as far as the crowd was concerned, we even saw a few walkers and wheelchairs, but the show was phenomenal. We really had a great time….my personal fave was “Hey Nineteen” and I think Kev’s was “Asia.” It was a really great show and we definitely felt it was worth the trip to Cincinnati. Way to go Steely Dan…maybe you can make the trip to Indy next time!
