Hodgepodge Soup & Staying Warm

Last night as I was making dinner I was taking an informal inventory of what food I had, and realized I had a lot of veggies, some which were going to go bad soon, and a few half empty cartons of beef & chicken stock.  Then I found a bag of soup starter in the freezer (basically just a medley of frozen vegetables) and realized I could probably make some veggie soup.  So I threw the starter in along with some onions, celery, a potato, some sweet corn from my parents farm, green beans, garlic, shallots,  and a dash of about every spice in my spice cabinet.  I also found some italian sausage/sweet pepper and chicken/asiago/mushroom sausages in my freezer.  So I sauteed them & threw them in.  Then I threw it in the crock pot today and let it cook on low for 12 hours today.   It was DELICIOUS.  One of the best soups I’ve ever made.  Makes me wonder about what other interesting things I could throw together with the “just a bit left”s in the fridge.  I realize I need to be more creative and not let things in the fridge waste just because there is just a tad left and I’m not sure what to do with it.  That’s what a crock pot and winter weather are for right?

Speaking of winter, we’re having a super storm, with major wind (58 mph at one point today), snow, rain, more wind, and extreme cold overnight.  So I’m trying to stay warm.  I’ve got my pjs on and am laying under a down blanket.  I’m full over scalding hot hodgepodge soup and I’m having a glass of wine.  (And secretly hoping for a 2 hour delay in the morning).  I think I’m set.

  1. That sounds awesome. I love doing that too. I always feel like Grandma Haynes when I do it. Remember her hodgepodge soups?

I had forgotten about her soups. I do remember her delicious hodgepodge cereals. They were the best!
