My first 5K

Saturday morning I participated in my first official “race” as an adult.  It was a 5K at my gym, and my friend Lindsay suggested it.  We’ve been walking together for awhile now, and it’s just one more little thing to keep some motivation in the exercise regime.  If you have read previous posts you will know that I have never been a runner, even at the prime of my physical shape. However, Lindsay and I ended up running roughly half of our “race”.  And it felt really good.  Aside from the fact that I had to get up at 6:30 in the morning on a Saturday morning, it was 37 degrees, and it rained the entire time.  But we did not let it dampen our spirits.  We kept right on going and even managed to laugh through much of it.  I felt so great afterwards.  I had done a 15K in high school a few times (walking not running) but nothing since being “older and out of shape” - or rather on my climb back to getting in shape.  So it felt like a real accomplishment.   When I got home I soaked in a scolding hot shower for 20 minutes….I didn’t think I would ever feel warm again.  Although we were bundled up sufficiently it’s just hard to be warm when it’s 37 degrees and you’re running in the rain.

After my hot shower I headed off to the Outlet mall in Edinburgh, where I spent the next five hours somehow.  Here I learned a few things…Ruby Tuesday has the best salad bar ever and is a great way to energize on a long shopping spree.  Women love coupons.  And the outlet mall was packed boyond crazy withich makes me wonder on earth it will be like here in a few weeks.

That just didn’t seem to be enough shopping so I had to stop by the Castleton mall on my way home to FINALLY buy the North Face jacket I’ve been wanting.  The Chicago store didn’t have my size so I was thrilled when Dicks had it.  Yeah.  What an exhausting day it was. But a great day.  And today I got to grocery shop and cook, and lay around and get sucked into movies I’ve already seen and get sucked into shows about earthworms and how mattresses and wood flooring is made.  Weird…but very interesting.  What a nice weekend.  Just what I needed.

Next week I’m going to try to tackle some real Christmas shopping before the evils of Black Friday hit.  We’ll see how that goes.     I know my friend has some photos of the Gobbler Gallup…I’ll try to get a hold of those and get them posted later.
