Friday morning at 9:00 I had my first official Yoga class at my gym. Technically it is a Yoga/Pilates infusion class. Yes I have done Yoga plenty of times but I have never actually taken a “live” class. And taking a class is much different than doing it at home. When you’re at home you can stop when you’re tired, answer your phone if it rings, stop to get a drink, and roll your eyes and think “yeah, right” when a nearly impossible move comes up. When you’re in a class you just have to do the moves and try to do them well without looking too stupid.
Let me back up for a minute. On December 20th I had foot surgery. I was pretty laid up for quite some time. Pretty much all I did for four months was watch movies and play Guitar Hero. Being practically immobile for that long really wreaks havoc on you physically. So I decided that since I have 2 months off of work (this is where people’s hatred of my typically grows) that I would try to get back into decent shape. I started taking tennis lessons with a friend awhile ago (more on that later) and decided I would use my flexible schedule to sign up for Pilates and Yoga at my gym.
Pilates is on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Until taking this class I had never done it before. It’s way harder than I imagined it would be. I really like it a lot. Yoga is on Friday. I missed the first one due to being out of town, so yesterday was my first one. Like I said before, I had never taken a Yoga class before, and I’ve never really been a huge fan of Yoga. To me it’s more like stretching and breathing rather than exercise. If I’m going to exercise I want to sweat and feel like I did something. Since this class is a Pilates/Yoga fusion I decided to give it a try.
Sometimes exercise classes can be intimidating. I’m pretty sure some of the women in my Pilates class are professional Pilates students. Although I am improving, the first few times it took a lot of mental and physical energy to not fall on my face. Anyway I went to Yoga yesterday, and the instructor really worked us. I feel like it was a great mixture of toning, stretching, and balancing. And I was pleasantly tired afterwards. And invigorated. So now I’m hooked on Yoga/Pilates and I can’t wait till next Friday!

Sounds fun Em. Have you seen Yoga clothes by Athleta? They almost make me want to do Yoga.

What’s Guitar Hero? I’ve increased my spider solitaire (expert level) to 5% since my foot surgery 2 months ago. That’s been my only real accomplishment this summer. ;0)
